Your Course Instructor Katie Leikam, LCSW, LISW-CP, BC-TMH

I am a WPATH GEI SOC v7 Certified therapist who supports the informed consent model of care. I have worked with over 500 transgender and LGBTQ clients in my private practice over the years and completed over 150 hours of training for LGBTQ affirming care from WPATH and national conferences. I am a national speaker at gender conferences such as The Philly Trans Wellness Conference and Gender Odyssey and a presenter at USPATH. I have trained and consulted with dozens of therapists who are seeking more competency in their practices. I believe clinicians should be competent and trained when working with transgender and gender expansive clients and offer these trainings to support the mental health community.

  • Clinical Interventions with Transgender Children

    How to work with younger transgender and gender expansive children through education on child development stages, how children express their gender identity and offer clinical interventions for supporting transgender children.

  • Learn about including parents, friends and school in the child's life.

    Katie will teach how to effectively involve parents, schools and friends and support systems in a transgender child’s life so that they can explore their identity without restraints of societies gender norms. With this training, as a clinician, you will have the basis of working with and clinically supporting transgender children in your practice.

  • Research about Transgender Children

    Learn why watchful waiting can harm a child and when it will help. Learn facts and research on the occurrence of children who are transgender. Learn about the construct of gender as it relates to young children.

Course curriculum

Clinical Work with Young Transgender Children is a live recorded videos and CEU's are are approved by the UGA School of Social Work for 3 core CEU's for Social Workers and LMFT's, LPC's. Objectives- 1. Understand the continuum of gender identity in children 2. Understand gender identity and the stages of child development 3. Learn how to talk to and include parents, youth groups, friends and schools in supporting transgender children 4. Learn clinical interventions for supporting transgender children.
